Hailing from Waipu, New Zealand, Alien Weaponry is a metal band that blends thrash and groove metal with traditional Māori music and themes. The band was formed in 2010 by brothers Henry and Lewis de Jong and later joined by bassist Tūranga Morgan-Edmonds. All three band members are of Māori heritage and have tribal connections to Ngāti Pikiao and Ngāti Raukawa.
A defining feature of the band is their use of te reo Māori, the indigenous language of New Zealand, in many of their songs. This isn't just a stylistic choice; it's a core part of their identity and a way of contributing to the revitalization of Māori language and culture through modern music.
Their lyrics often explore pivotal moments in Māori and New Zealand history, including colonial land seizures ("Raupatu"), the 1809 attack on the ship Boyd, and the Battle of Gate Pā ("Rū Ana Te Whenua"). These stories are delivered with a raw intensity that channels the spirit of haka and traditional Māori storytelling.
What sets Alien Weaponry apart is not only the language and themes, but also the integration of Māori rhythms and performance styles into the structure of their songs. Their music features chant-like vocals and syncopated rhythms that echo precolonial Māori music. This creates a sound that is not just metal with Māori elements but a true fusion of both traditions.
Their live shows often begin with a haka, grounding their performances in cultural tradition and setting a powerful tone for what follows. For Alien Weaponry, metal is more than music; it’s a way to honor their heritage and share it with the world with force and pride.
