who we are

Freeform Tradition features artists and projects from around the world who engage with cultural heritage, reinvent traditions, and showcase them in fresh, unexpected, and sometimes contradictory contexts.

main idea

In today’s globalized world, conflicts and oppression persist based on race, nationality, or religion, partly due to the lingering effects of colonialism and its prejudices.

Our festival fosters dialogue among people and communities of diverse identities, reducing tension and preventing the demonization of ’others.’

Freeform Tradition aims to present all cultures as contemporary and potentially global.

manifesto

Freeform Tradition is not just a festival; it’s a conceptual platform where the very composition of participants becomes an artistic, political, and social statement.

We curate musicians who approach national, ethnic, or regional musical traditions with a fresh perspective. Whether they preserve authentic sounds, reinterpret heritage in a global context, or innovate entirely new ’local’ sounds, each artist contributes to a dynamic tapestry of musical expression.

Our commitment to musical diversity speaks to our belief in amplifying different voices and cultures. Through our programming, we strive to reflect the richness, complexity, and challenges of our world while confronting injustice head-on.

Mission

Our mission is to promote the values of diversity and equity by expanding opportunities for the representation of diverse voices. We advocate for a collective effort to explore ways, means, and language to integrate culture into the processes
of decolonization.

We support the development of original and authentic cultural practices as integral components of contemporary culture and lifestyle. Additionally, we advocate for cultural diversity by encouraging research and fostering an appreciation for the value of various cultural practices and traditions

goals

Create an inspiring environment and platform that facilitates active interaction between the audience and professional musicians from diverse musical forms and traditions.
Promote exploration and understanding of the world, social structures, and social connections through musical culture and traditions.
Foster new relationships, both creative and social, through festival activities and programs.

open call

Ensuring musical diversity is one of our main goals. We encourage artists from all over the world to join us on stage. By appealing to a wide range of people and supporting diverse voices and cultures, we reflect the complexity and issues of the world. Have something to say, play or sing to us?
