Arkady Shilkloper is a Russian-German multi-instrumentalist, composer, and one of the most innovative French horn players of our time. Born in Moscow in 1956, he began his professional journey in the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra before joining the State Symphony Orchestra of the USSR under Yevgeny Svetlanov.
In the 1980s, he turned toward jazz and improvisational music, collaborating with leading experimental groups such as Vladimir Chekasin’s ensemble, Anatoly Vapirov’s trio, and later, the Moscow Art Trio with Mikhail Alperin and Sergey Starostin. These collaborations helped define a new space for the French horn in jazz, breaking away from its traditional orchestral role.
Arkady's work is marked by his pioneering use of the alphorn in contemporary music. An instrument more often associated with the Swiss Alps than the jazz stage, he reimagined it through the lens of improvisation, often combining it with live electronics, percussion, and looping to create immersive soundscapes. His solo performances are a blend of virtuosity, humor, and sonic experimentation.
In the 1990s, Shilkloper launched a solo career and released a number of albums showcasing his range and imagination. His instrumentarium includes not only the French horn and alphorn, but also the English horn, parforce horn, flugelhorn, trombone, and various custom-built instruments. He continues to perform at international festivals and collaborate with musicians across genres and continents.
Alongside his performing career, Arkady is a dedicated educator, regularly giving masterclasses and mentoring a new generation of brass musicians. His musical language bridges classical training, jazz improvisation, and global influences, making him a central figure in modern world and experimental music.
