Bulat Gafarov is a multi-instrumentalist, virtuoso singer, composer, and ethnographer whose musical world knows no borders. His personal collection of over 1,000 instruments (from jaw harps and didgeridoos to rare stringed and percussion instruments) forms the core of his performances, where he often plays up to five instruments at once.
His voice is as versatile as his instruments: Bulat masters throat singing, beatboxing, and vocal techniques from Arabic, Indian, Russian, and jazz traditions. This rare blend of skills allows him to create rich, textured soundscapes that feel both ancient and futuristic.
An explorer at heart, Bulat has spent years organizing ethnographic expeditions across Russia, the CIS, and beyond, gathering forgotten songs and sounds from remote regions. These travels have shaped his artistic vision: every concert becomes a musical journey through time, space, and culture.
His band Toke-Cha performs in the style of modern ethnic world music, blending traditional instruments with electronic effects and field recordings. He also collaborates with theaters, filmmakers, and musicians around the world. His music appears in stage productions, films, animations, and even video games.
Beyond the stage, Bulat is a creator of multimedia projects, musical encyclopedias, and original scores. Whether composing for ballet or designing immersive shows, his work is united by one mission: to preserve and transform the music of the world.
